Arc de Triomphe

Paris, France

The Arc de Triomphe is one of the most iconic landmarks in Paris, France. It stands at the western end of the Champs-Élysées, at the center of Place Charles de Gaulle (formerly Place de l'Étoile), where twelve major avenues radiate outward like the points of a star.

Commissioned by Napoleon Bonaparte after his victory at Austerlitz, the monument honors the soldiers who fought and died for France during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. The names of hundreds of French generals and military victories are engraved on its inner and outer walls.

Beneath the arch lies the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I, whose eternal flame serves as a lasting tribute to the nation's fallen servicemen and women.
